SymTorrent is the first full-featured and complete
BitTorrent client for Symbian OS. It supports downloading multiple
torrent files at the same time, is capable of both downloading and uploading
and can save the status of your unfinished torrents, so you can resume the
downloads after restarting the application. You can also check the status of
each file inside a torrent along with several other statistics and properties
during download.
Currently, it is available for mobile devices based on the S60 Platform 3rd and
2nd edition.
Supported phone models include all Symbian OS-based Nokia Nseries/Eseries devices
and many older models as well.
SymTorrent is free (and open source) software, distributed under the terms of
the GNU General Public License.
We highly appreciate any help. If you like this software and want to support
the development of SymTorrent by making a donation, you can do so via PayPal.
You should also check out our other popular mobile file-sharing application,

Unfortunately, it seems that our forum is down. It was hosted by a free forum provider (jconserv), which has not been online for quite some time now. I will try to come up with a new solution as soon as possible. Also, I hope I will be able to release a new version of SymTorrent soon (with several bugfixes and possibly some new features as well).

The previous certificate, which we used to sign SymTorrent, has expired. This caused that you were not able
to install the prebuilt (SIS) version. I have rebuilt SymTorrent 1.30 with a new certificate, and now it sould be
valid for another year. Please download the latest version if you had problems installing the application.

SymTorrent and Symella are featured in a new book: Mobile Phone Programming and its Application to Wireless Networking. The chapter written by us covers
Peer-to-peer file sharing on mobile devices. We discuss the basics of Gnutella and BitTorrent and then show how they can be applied in a mobile
environment. Some code examples which demonstrate SymTorrent's class library are also present in the book.

SymTorrent 1.30
is released. This is a major update, we've fixed and added several things so make sure you
update your version. SymTorrent has become much more stable and efficient.
One of the changes is that from now on, SymTorrent will be available in two different installable versions. For everyday usage you should download SymTorrent without the built-in tracker, for it saves you some memory and
disk space.
More significant changes are as follows (for the complete
list check out the release notes).
|
-
End game algorithm has been implemented, downloading shouldn't slow down at the end. When a torrent enters end game, an "EG" label is shown
next to the download percentage in the torrent's status view.
-
In the torrent status view the total number of peers is displayed (in brackets) along with the number of connected peers.
-
The settings menu has been divided into a couple of subparts (separate page for general, proxy, and tracker settings).
-
Piece hashes are checked when a new torrent is opened. If matching files are found in the target directory then those parts of torrent won't be downloaded again.
-
"SymTorrent disconnects good peers after handshake" MAJOR BUG fixed (apparently it caused that SymTorrent disconnected from around the third of the peers
right after handshake).

We have released a proxy server application for Windows, which allows you to set up a "gateway computer" that accepts incoming
connections and forwards them to your mobile. It is mainly meant for testing and doing research but some of you may benefit
from using it for just downloading. It is available on the Download page.

SymTorrent 1.26
is released. We have managed to track some major bugs which could have been responsible for
slowdowns and other tranfer-related problems. In addition, a few more optimalizations have been
made on the protocol level and in the tracker's engine. We highly recommend to update your version!

SymTorrent 1.21
is released. The new version features a built-in tracker, proxy support and a couple of bugfixes.
On the protocol level, SymTorrent now supports the multi-tracker extension. We are going to add further details on the use of the proxy and
the tracker in the near future.

SymTorrent 1.12
is released. I've fixed an ugly bug which caused a crash on some older S60 2nd
edition devices when the user entered the "Details view".
From now on, autostarting SymTorrent works on 2nd edition devices (.torrent
file extension is associated with SymTorrent). You can select a .torrent file
in your browser or file manager and the application is started automatically.
This feature is still not supported on 3rd edition devices due to the strict
security restrictions.
Please check out this
forum topic and post a reply if you are using SymTorrent on a type of
mobile phone which isn't included in the list.

SymTorrent 1.10 is released. The new version can accept incoming connections
(please read the notes on the
about page) and besides S60 3rd edition, S60 2nd phones are supported
too.
The binary (installable) version of SymTorrent 1.0 has been downloaded over
1700 times till now.
If you have any comments, complaints or suggestions, please share your opinion
in our discussion board.

Some of you have reported that SymTorrent doesn't reload the torrents after a
crash. This is because in the current version the state of the torrents are
saved only if you exit the application manually. It means that if the
application crashes, the state of the torrents won't be saved at all. In the
next version, SymTorrent will save state in every X minutes so you will only
lose the data downloaded in the last X minutes.
Accepting incoming conections is also a missing feature, it will be added in
one of the upcoming versions (SymTorrent currently uploads data only if one of
the peers you are connected to requests a part).

The first version of SymTorrent is available for download. It has been under
development since the beginnning of 2006. We have tested it on Nokia N80 and
N91 smartphones but it can still contain some untracked bugs, so any feedback
is appreciated. We are going to add a forum to the website later but you can
contact me directly.
